Graphical user interfaces play a vital role in resource mapping and management, especially when dealing with geographically distributed materials. The present study highlights the application of a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based mapping framework for the effective visualization of various coal mines located in the vicinity of the study region, along with the quantification of available coal mine overburden (CMO). The developed spatial tool is further utilized to identify inefficiencies in the existing transportation system for CMO, where longer haul distances, increased operating costs, and environmental concerns frequently arise due to the absence of spatial optimization in traditional transportation practices. The primary aim of this study is to create a GIS-based framework that supports efficient transportation planning for overburden material generated from coal mines in the Nagpur area. Additionally, the study focuses on designing a GIS-driven model to streamline the movement of CMO from the mines to the Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT). To accurately locate the coal mines, satellite imagery was georeferenced, road networks were digitized, and field surveys were conducted to gather essential non-spatial attributes. Individual route maps with distance measurements were generated to process spatial data, enabling practical, economic, and well-optimized planning decisions. Improved connectivity between coal mines and surrounding industrial sectors enhances material flow, reduces travel time, and increases the efficiency of resource utilization. This improvement leads to an estimated 8% reduction in overall transportation effort. The proposed GIS-integrated method offers a scalable, efficient, and environmentally responsible solution for industrial logistics and transportation planning.
