The functionality and dynamics of a place are significantly influenced by the quality of its space. Public spaces form the backbone of any society, and they must be designed to be sociable, accessible, diverse, and inviting. The term that best encapsulates this concept is “convivial.” Convivial spaces are those that make individuals feel at ease. The spatial features and characteristics of these areas play a crucial role in their conviviality.

In any society, culture is pivotal to its progression. Cultural institutions, as prime locations for the dissemination of cultural education, are integral parts of society. They serve as vital public spaces where designers can analyse and learn about spatial aspects, developing sensitivity to how these spaces function. The behaviour and interactions of individuals within a space are largely governed by the built environment, unbuilt areas, and their spatial features.

This book "Welcoming Spaces: The Art of Conviviality" aims to explore the factors that significantly impact the conviviality of cultural institutions. It begins with a literature review of public spaces, cultural institutions, and convivial spaces to identify the factors influencing conviviality. This is followed by case studies of Indian cultural institutions to compare and analyse the impact of these factors. Through this process, it is concluded that comfort, accessibility and connectivity, control or ownership over space, engagement with the space, and aesthetics and design all contribute to the conviviality of a cultural institution. However, the degree to which these factors impact a space varies.
